SCREENING ROOM

SO! Here’s the thing about SCREENING – not study or work related – but CONSTANT ‘bad habit’ screening. You’ve heard the cautionary SCIENCE associated with doom-scrolling or click-bait.

Well, here’s another REASON why you shouldn’t ignore the science. When you constantly swipe left and right, or continuously scroll up and up – you’re going straight to the punch line. Straight to the REWARD. There’s no slow ABSORPTION of deep or even casual information. Just instant gratification reaction: “Ha-Ha” or “Ewww” or “Wow”.

Eventually, your STAMINA for perseverance of deeper reading becomes weaker. Your ABILITY to focus for longer periods of time becomes more difficult. You become just a reactionary to someone else’s HA-HA, Ewww or Wow.

Now you may think WHOA, hold on there! I’ve got classes where I do plenty of thinking and must be ACTIVELY engaged. Do you? If every time you get a ping and you look at your phone, you’re getting DISTRACTED. So, just as your brain is about to create a nice deep wrinkle, your phone pings and the brain wrinkle, becomes more of a crease or a SERIES of creases.

My advice? Plan some time every day to LEAVE the screening room. Even for just an hour. TWO is even better! Put the phone on Do Not Disturb. Shut down the computer. You see, it isn’t when you’re BUSY that you’re at your most CREATIVE, it’s when you’re at your LEISURE. When your mind is undisturbed, gets BORED, relaxes and begins to entertain itself. That’s when EUREKA moments happen.
